Honderden vrouwen uit verschillende landen hebben in een brief aan vertegenwoordigers van internationale instellingen aandacht gevraagd voor de aanvallen van de Turkse staat op Rojava en opgeroepen tot internationale erkenning van het Democratisch Autonoom Bestuur van Noord- en Oost-Syrië.
De open brief voor een democratisch Syrië gebaseerd op de vrijheid van vrouwen was gericht aan António Guterres, secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, Sima Sami Bahous, uitvoerend directeur van UN Women, Roberta Metsola, voorzitter van het Europees Parlement, António Luís Santos da Costa, voorzitter van de Europese Raad, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretaris-generaal van de Arabische Liga.
De brief van de internationale vrouwen luidt als volgt:
“Sinds de val van het Assad-regime in Syrië op 8 december 2024 zijn er discussies gaande over de toekomst van Syrië, en daarmee nieuwe kansen voor een democratische wederopbouw van de Syrische samenleving.
Het is essentieel dat de samenleving zelf deze wederopbouw vormgeeft en bevordert. Het is ook essentieel dat Syrische vrouwen betrokken zijn bij het vormgeven van dit proces door de politiek en alle levenssferen op een zelfgekozen manier mee vorm te geven.
Syrië verkeert al meer dan tien jaar in een staat van burgeroorlog, een proces dat begon met een opstand tegen het onderdrukkende Baathistische regime. In de 13 jaar die volgden, werd de samenleving herhaaldelijk geconfronteerd met de meest gruwelijke misdaden tegen de menselijkheid door verschillende terroristische groeperingen, zoals de zogenaamde Islamitische Staat of invasieaanvallen door de Turkse staat in strijd met het internationaal recht.
In Noord- en Oost-Syrië bouwt de Koerdische bevolking sinds 2012 aan een zelfbesturende samenleving gebaseerd op vrouwenemancipatie, ecologie en basisdemocratie. Vrouwen hebben hierin een zeer belangrijke rol gespeeld. In dit sociale model nemen vrouwen verantwoordelijkheid op zich en zijn ze vertegenwoordigd op alle gebieden van het sociale en politieke leven. Ze hebben zich georganiseerd om zichzelf en het leven van iedereen te verdedigen. De vrouwenverdedigingseenheden van de YPJ vochten samen met de YPG en SDF tegen Islamitische Staat en bevrijdden talloze steden van hun heerschappij. Het sociale model van democratisch confederalisme in Noord- en Oost-Syrië heeft een multi-etnisch en multireligieus samenleven gecreëerd dat als model kan dienen voor reorganisatie in heel Syrië.
Vrouwen in Syrië hebben zich verenigd en georganiseerd om terug te vechten tegen de aanvallen op vrouwen en de samenleving als geheel. Ze zijn vastbesloten zich in te zetten voor het vredesproces, voor een democratische samenleving en voor waarheid en gerechtigheid. Daarom presenteerde de Syrische Vrouwenraad op 22 december 2024 een verklaring om Syrië opnieuw vorm te geven. In deze verklaring roept de vereniging, bestaande uit vrouwen met verschillende etnische, religieuze en culturele achtergronden, op tot de beslissende deelname van vrouwen en alle geledingen van de Syrische samenleving aan de politieke processen.
Wij steunen de 13 doelen en eisen die zijn ontwikkeld door de Syrische Vrouwenraad om een nieuw democratisch Syrië op te bouwen gebaseerd op de participatie van vrouwen. Bovendien is de erkenning en deelname van het Democratisch Autonoom Bestuur in Noord- en Oost-Syrië (DAANES) aan het huidige proces ook essentieel voor een democratische toekomst in Syrië.
Wij roepen de internationale gemeenschap en alle politieke actoren op om de DAANES officieel te erkennen, de maatschappelijke organisaties daar direct te ondersteunen en een langdurige samenwerking aan te gaan. Wij roepen op tot steun en politieke allianties met democratische vrouwenorganisaties en het maatschappelijk middenveld in heel Syrië, in plaats van samenwerking met jihadistische groeperingen wier ideologie en praktijk gebaseerd is op de vernedering en gewelddadige onderdrukking van vrouwen.
We roepen ook op tot onmiddellijke stopzetting van wapenleveranties en politieke concessies aan Turkije. De diplomatieke betrekkingen met de democratische krachten in Syrië moeten worden versterkt om de gewelddadige aanvallen van Turkije te stoppen, de oorlog te beëindigen en de opbouw van een democratisch Syrië mogelijk te maken.
Nu is het tijd om de democratische krachten in het Midden-Oosten, zoals de DAANES, te versterken en aan de kant te staan van de vrouwen die strijden voor vrijheid, vrede en democratie in Syrië!”
